March 27, 2009 Ubud Bali Indonesia

I had to make a hard decision today. One choice - go to another yoga class at the famed Yoga Barn of Ubud - (Valhalla for yogis, Shiva Rea had even been there just two weeks ago), or go to the Monkey Forest.

March 20, 2009 Ubud Bali Indonesia

Ubud has to be one of the most beautiful places that I do business in, and my hotel is so worth all of it's $25 a night. The grounds are beautiful, and I fall asleep listening to just the peeps, croaks and clacks of the frogs and lizards, and wake up to the crowing of roosters and cooing of doves. Business here needs to be concluded in the next few days, as we're coming up to Nyepi, or Silent Day or Balinese New Year.

Sometimes I amaze myself with my own stupidity. On the 14th, I was met at the hotel with a driver named Gusti, to take me to my shipper, Mr. Gusti. I've spoken with Gusti over the phone several times, and we've emailed a bunch, but I hadn't been to his office yet this year, and looked forward to seeing him again. We went past his office from last year, and I didn't think too much of it, as they have several different warehouses. So we get to this new warehouse, I get into the office, and someone sticks out their hand for me to shake.

My first action on arriving to Bali was to take off my shawl. I had only seen one pair of bare shoulders on a woman (and that was at the airport) the whole time that I was on Java. I immediately felt weirdly exposed and underdressed, but got over it within the first fifteen minutes. I've either got prickly heat or heat rash or scabies or there are things in the bed at the hotel. Time for a tube of Dr. Singh or Tiger Balm, or whatever the local menthol goop is.

The airport coffee shop was selling Luwak coffee at $6 a cup, it's the coffee made from coffee beans that have been pooped out by civets (think weasels) Other than the unsavory aspect, it also sounds like the potential for exploitation off the little critters, like being force-fed. Otherwise, my Bro would be receiving a bag of Luwak coffee, he'd expressed interest in it at one time.

March 9, 2009 Semarang, Java

The best laid plans..... I thought I'd be in Jakarta tonight - ha - When I got to the Semarang Airport, there was not one seat available today to Jakarta. Not with Garuda, nor Mandala, nor Lion air, nor Batavia. I was told that this was because of the long week-end, people had taken off. No problem getting a ticket for tomorrow morning, so on the bright side, I get to stay at the (in)famous Hotel Candi Baru here in Semarang.

Today is a Sunday and pretty much everything shuts down. I'd planned on going on a walk out to the beach, but the thunder is rumbling and the clouds are getting really black. Since tomorrow is a Muslim holiday, hence no work, I've decided to head back to Jakarta a day early. It's OK, I've decided that I'm going to be working with Derrick and Anna. The vivacious and charming Anna is Indonesian, and Derrick is an ex-pat Welshman with over 20 years under his belt as a furniture man.

It's only 6:30 p.m., and I am completely beat, it's going to be an early night. I don't have a clue about anything yet.. I thought I'd go to the bus station, there IS no bus station, you just find the right road and wait till the right bus comes along. What was supposed to be a 11/2 hour trip was closer to 3 hours, and my alarm clock, which also has a thermometer and flashlight in it, said that the bus was 98 degrees. Easily.

Men in ikat sarongs, covered up ladies, the call to prayer and the pungent odor of kreteks, or clove cigarettes. We are soooo not in Kansas anymore. When I got up this morning the only thing planned was that I had a one way ticket to Jakarta. I thought that last night I'd have time to make some further travel plans, but the plane was late leaving Chiang Mai so as it was, I barely got five hours sleep before leaving Bangkok this morning.

Talking to Adun's partner yesterday, it was as I suspected, Adun was down selling at the Chatachak Market in Bangkok. Sales are off for everyone, so they are doing whatever it takes. Unfortunately for Adun, with the the two women who stole his bag, "whatever it takes" means theft. He was just starting to set up at the market on Saturday when two women came into his stall and made off with his valise. It had his keys to the booth, his clothes, cell phone, credit card and the previous day's receipts.
